When writing thesis, or dissertation, or any scientific paper I would say, there must be a part of literature review, where any kind of references we use we put in there as our major sources for explaining our background, objectives, or discussion. I am currently working on ion exchange, and well, though not yet consider to write the major portion of my dissertation, I am reading lots of journals and books to find anything important.
Can you believe that even Holy Bible mention about the application of ion exchange?? I was reading a book entitled Ion Exchange by Friedrich Helfferich, and in the Introduction part I found a quote from The Book of Exodus, chapter 15, verse 23-25. It was read, And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah. And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink? And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them.
And the explanation is, that Moses utilized a kind of tree, which we consider as natural ion exchanger, to prepare drinking water form brackish water. Well, I guess ion exchange has an interesting history.
